The transportation and logistics sector contributes more than 20% of Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and has seen increased emissions over the past decade. Despite industry commitments to reduce emissions, the expansion of global trade makes this challenging. Achieving zero-emission trucking and logistics by 2050 requires unprecedented collaboration across industry, communities, all levels of government, Indigenous stakeholders, and academia.
For the Long Haul, our heavy-duty zero and low-emission trucking and logistics program, is a first-of-its-kind government and industry collaboration. The project aims to accelerate the adoption of low and zero-emission fuels and build a clean energy and technology hub in Northern BC, from Prince Rupert to Prince George.
Launched in February 2024, the program currently includes 15+ private and public partners such as drivers and operators, fuel suppliers, OEMs, government regulators, insurance providers, utilities, and academic stakeholders. Two demonstration projects began in February 2024, with three more planned by the end of the year.
The demonstration projects will generate detailed performance data to provide a comprehensive understanding of product performance, including range and costs, shared with all partners. This data will help de-risk adoption, identify needed innovations, and inform government policy. By including stakeholders that operate over 16,000 vehicles across BC, the projects ensure a focus on user needs.
Achieving zero emissions in trucking represents a modern social contract, minimizing short- and medium-term costs for funders and operators while achieving public goods. This will lead to a cleaner, more inclusive economy by accounting for the downstream societal costs of fossil fuels.
Innovate BC has raised over $7.5MM towards the program and will lead it until mid-2026. For more information, please visit our website or contact us directly. Together, we can drive towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
